Affording a Shlenker School Education
At The Shlenker School, we seek to enroll and provide need-based financial assistance to qualified students who will experience success in our programs. It is available for families who qualify according to the guidelines and policies set forth by the Financial Assistance Committee and approved by the Shlenker Board of Trustees. All information submitted to the committee is kept strictly confidential, and any correspondence between the committee and applicants is handled by the business manager of The Shlenker School.
In processing the application, the committee takes into account all financial information provided, recommendations by the processing service (SSS—School and Student Service for Financial Aid), and guidelines determined by the Board of Trustees.
Steps for Applying for Financial Assistance
The deadline for submitting the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) to SSS and Shlenker and the 2009 Tax Return to Shlenker is on or before February 26, 2010 for current Shlenker families and new families. Our school code is 4734. This must be entered in item 7A of the PFS.
1. Requests for financial assistance will be considered only for students who have formally made application to The Shlenker School.
For returning students, this requires the submission of the tuition contract and the non-refundable, adjusted tuition deposit ($100 for Early Childhood and Elementary). The tuition deposit will be applied to your child's 2010-2011 tuition if the contract and deposit are returned by the due date on the contract. There is a place on your contract for you to indicate that you are applying for financial assistance.
For new students, this requires submission of a new student application and the non-refundable application fee ($100) and assessment fee (where applicable). Financial assistance awards for new students will not be finalized, and parents will not be notified, until the student has been accepted into the program and the tuition contract and the non-refundable adjusted tuition deposit ($100 for Early Childhood and Elementary) have been submitted. The tuition deposit will be applied to your child's 2010-2011 tuition if the contract and deposit are returned by the due date on the contract. There is a place on your contract for you to indicate that you are applying for financial assistance.
2. Access the financial assistance application, called the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online (after November 15, 2008) at www.nais.org/financialaid/sss. The PFS is a standardized and confidential form used by independent schools throughout the country and administered by SSS. Directions for completing the form are included online. If you are unable to access the PFS online, you can request a copy of the form from Carol Altman, our Business Manager.
3. Completely fill out the application online. You must pay for your online PFS by credit card. If you prefer to pay by check, you will need to obtain a PFS from Shlenker, complete it, and send it with your check in the envelope attached to the form.
4. Send a copy of the PFS to The Shlenker School to the attention of the Business Manager. Also include signed copies of all pages of your 2009 IRS Federal Income
Tax Return and 2009 W-2 and/or 1099 forms from all employers for individuals listed
in Section C of the PFS. Tax information should not be submitted to SSS. If you wish
to explain any unusual circumstances, we encourage you to write a narrative to provide more information and a better understanding of your personal situation.
5. If applying online, you must still send a copy of the PFS to The Shlenker School with
all items listed in #4. Remember to print copies for Shlenker and for yourself before submitting your application online.
It is our goal to help as many families as possible to attend Shlenker. However, financial assistance is limited, and we urge you to send in your application by the indicated deadline of February 26, 2010.
